Hypnotist at Walkden LRC

Have you ever been hypnotized?

Students at Walkden Centre were given the opportunity to spend time with a professional
hypnotist on the 14th January.

The session was very well received by all involved
and students learned temporary skills they never
thought possible, such as learning Martian.

Imagination is the key to hypnosis, showing that while your mind is powerful and complicated, with the right skills it's easily fooled.

Struggling for inspiration?

THE MAN WHO OWNS THE NEWS

By MICHAEL WOLFF

If you are on one of our exciting media courses why not try this book profiling one of the most important men in world media?

Rupert Murdoch deals in companies that have extraordinary political and cultural power. From The Sun and the rise of Thatcher to Fox News and the war on terror, we have been living in Rupert Murdoch’s Trance since the late seventies. This book lets us in to all the answers hidden behind the man who owns the news.

“A MAN FOR OUR TIME.”

Michael Wolff gives us an insight to the world of media and news world, and the man who is all behind it. If you are studying media here at one of our centres and interested in how it all evolved, this is the book for you.

“CHARMING AND RELENTLESS.”

Michael Wolff describes Murdoch as a Machiavellian titan; overbearing, but loving farther; love-struck husband (of a woman 40 years his junior); and the most cynical and brilliant newsman who has ever lived.

“ONE OF THE GREATEST DEAL-MAKERS ALIVE”

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year.

Chinese New Year is held on Thursday, February 19 2015

Chinese New Year started in 1766 BC - 1122 BC.  Chinese New Year Has more than 4,000 years of history, it is often known as the Spring Festival and 2015 is the year of the sheep.

Chinese New Year started when an ox with lion head (known as “Year”) was believed to stay in the sea. At the night of New Year's Eve, the "Year” will come out to harm people, animals, and proprieties. Later people found that the "Year" is afraid of red colour, fire, and loud sound. Therefore, for self-protection, people form the habit of posting red Dui Lian in front of the house, launching fireworks, and handing lantern at year end.

The celebration will sometimes be highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honour of heaven, earth, and other gods, as well as the family ancestors

Not like the Christian New Year which is based on a solar calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on a traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar whose date indicates both the moon phase and the time of the solar year.
A lunar month is around 2 days shorter than a solar month. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar, an extra month is inserted every few years. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.

Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality.

Now Available for Lending: Iron Man 3

Fresh from Marvel hero-fest The Avengers, the comic-book's favourite metal man returns for his third solo adventure to do battle with a new enemy.

Picking up from Iron Man 2, the world faces a new threat from international terrorist, the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley).  Despite protecting the world as Iron Man, outside the suit Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) now lives a reclusive life shunning his former celebrity status.

As his personal struggles start to affect his relationship with Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), an enigmatic figure in the form of Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) reawakens his distant past to complicate things further.

Tony's world quickly comes under threat from a host of deadly enemies as this latest superhero story proves to be every bit a comedy as it is action-adventure

Packed full of techno-fight scenes and witty one-liners, Iron Man 3 ramps up the action to new heights with an explosive mechanical man showdown that will go down a bomb for fans of the franchise.

If superhero action and easy laughs are your thing then this will definitely be a hit.

Iron Man 3 and other DVDs are available for three-day loans from Walkden LRC, as well as other Salford City College sites.  Please ask staff for details.

The Hunger Games book review

The Hunger Games is an action fiction novel, based on an account of a 16 year old girl called Katniss Everdeen. Everdeen lives in a post-apocalyptic nation which was once North America. The Hunger Games are a televised annual event where 12 boys and 12 girls from each district of Capitol, an advanced metropolis. The Hunger Games are where one boy and one girl age 12-18 from each of the 12 districts are randomly selected through a lottery competition. In the competition the children are forced to fight until death and there is one rule kill or be-killed.  Katniss becomes at risk from the political leadership for her outspoken views on the hunger games. Katniss’ sister was nominated to enter the competition but Katniss steps forward to take her sister’s place in the games.

The book is for action fiction fans, which I was not but it was well written with a great plot and exciting action.  If you like videogames, this is the book for you, the blood and violence made it a horrifying book.  The Author writes in present day not past tense which gives it the feel as if you were there at the time. The book also looks at the poverty and starvation of many and looks how the main characters Teen survival under war like depression. These characters from the districts are in situation like a big brother TV program battling to win.  Katniss is predicted as heroine and tells her views of the situation.

The Smurfs DVD review

The Smurfs new movie begins with the Smurfs celebrating the Blue Moon festival in thier village. During the festival Gargamel attacks the village and in the confusion the Smurfs get sucked into a vortex and transported to New York.  The Smurfs find themselves on a quest to get home and meet a lovely couple called Patrick and Grace Winslow. Gargamel follows the Smurfs through the vortex to try to capture them, when the Winslow’s provide protection and help the Smurfs get home to their village.  Will the Smurfs get home and how will the Winslow’s cope when they are gone?

The Smurfs is a classic family film which everyone can enjoy watching. The little blue men and woman are on another adventure against the evil villain called Gargamel. The film uses a simple storyline to teach moral good values of kindness, helpfulness and being supportive to people in need. The film animation was done with the latest techniques and gave the Smurfs a 3D feel.
